Cyclife UK has implemented the STAR+ programme in its foundations for health and safety principles at work.

STAR+ is one of several human performance tools, a key component of Cyclife UK’s developing culture for compliance and safety. Indeed, Cyclife UK employees carrying out work must complete a STAR+ form prior to completing a new task. This is their last opportunity to check that the work they are planning to do is covered by our risk assessment.

STAR+ seeks to encourage the identification of change and to ensure that the hazards and risk associated with that change are appropriately managed.

STAR+ asks the operators to:

  • Stop before they start a task and think about what they are planning to do
  • Think about the hazard and risk associated with the task
  • Act if any of the hazards are not appropriately controlled, but if there is not, be mindful as they complete the task
  • Review the work once it is completed- is there anything we can learn?
  • If workers do not believe that hazards are appropriately managed, then they are required to stop and discuss with their supervisor. As part of the STAR+ process the team or the supervisor are encouraged to complete a safety conversation, this is the + (plus).

If a safety conversation is logged on the STAR+ form, then £1 is donated to a charity by Cyclife. This is to encourage engagement in the STAR+ programme. In 2022, Cyclife UK raised £1,018 for our three chosen UK charities which are local the Metal Recycling Facility in Lillyhall (Cockermouth Mountain Rescue, Great North Air Ambulance, and Dean Primary School). Alongside this, an additional £100 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support from STAR+ forms completed by our Projects Team.

STAR+ is extremely important for Cyclife and our safety programme but it is also important to support the communities in which we work. STAR+ brings these opportunities together”, concluded Kevin Dodd, Safety director at Cyclife UK.
